While Colorado Springs continues to be a great place to
live, crime continues to rise. While law enforcement does it very best to
continue to protect our community, budget shortfalls have led to
understaffed departments, increased call volumes and delayed responses.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the
average number of police officers in a city our size is 1,183 officers. The
Colorado Springs Police Department is compromised of only 687 officers. The
shortage of officers has led to an increased delay in response to alarms and
calls for service. This Colorado Springs Police Department averages nearly
11 minutes to respond to a call for service when the national average is
less than 8 minutes. Budget cuts have led the department to no longer
respond to call for theft where the suspect has not been captured. Traffic
accidents are no longer responded to so long as there are no injuries or
drugs/alcohol suspected.
Due to budget cuts, the El Paso County Sheriff's office
intends to lay off nearly 280 deputies at a time when the calls for service
have increase by 33%.
From 2006 to 2007, Rapes increased by 11%. Murders increased
by 80%. |
